Medical Coding Core Description

The medical coding core places a strong emphasis on developing a solid medical knowledge foundation beyond that seen in many medical coding programs. The program also offers extensive health information management (HIM) training on topics ranging from medicolegal issues to EHR implementation as well as ICD-10-CM. This training will prepare individuals to not only code but also open opportunities for advancement by providing knowledge not available in many coding programs.

Program Includes:

Anatomy, Physiology and Human Diseases

This course provides an overview to the anatomical structures and physiology of the human body. Each body system is discussed in terms of the major anatomical structures and function including how each system participates in homeostasis of the body. In addition, the course discusses selected major pathologies, including disease definitions and causes, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and possible treatments. Finally, the course discusses common issues and changes that occur in each body system through the lifespan. 

Medical Law and Ethics

This course provides an introduction to legal and ethical issues that impact healthcare professionals. Laws and regulations related to the healthcare industry such as HIPAA, Patient Bill of Rights, and standard of care are addressed. In addition, ethical and moral issues that healthcare professionals may encounter are presented. Students are encouraged to consider the impact that personal ethics and morals have on decision making in a healthcare professional role.

Medical Terminology

This course covers medical terminology, symbols and abbreviations, and the application of this new language in the field of healthcare. While terms are covered as they relate to body structure and function, the main focus is on medical vocabulary and being able to construct terms using word parts such as roots, suffixes, and prefixes. 

Core Courses

Healthcare Delivery Systems

This course provides perspectives on healthcare delivery past, present, and future. It also addresses the impact of healthcare issues on healthcare delivery including the determinants of health to include insurance costs, applications for health professions, and the need of comprehensive planning and its impact on the future. This course will encourage the formulation and evaluation of potential solutions to some of the most urgent healthcare delivery issues facing the U.S. today. 

Healthcare Data Content and Structures

The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the basic concepts surrounding health records and introduce them to the evolving profession of Health Information Management. It explores the uses and formats of health information and provides examples to illustrate the use of the health record as the basis for clinical code selection and reporting. 

Pathophysiology and Pharmacology

This course provides an introductory examination of pharmacology and pathophysiology as it relates to specific diseases and the treatment of each. It focuses on the processes that occur within various diseases, taking into account different perspectives and emphasizing the application of pharmacology practices, highlighting interrelated components that further the understanding of pharmacology and pathophysiology; the identification of diseases by their descriptions, the fundamental principles and methodology of pharmacological treatment, and the assessment of physiologic diseases and healing. 

Computer Basics in Health Care

Computers directly impact the healthcare industry as a whole, whether it be data exchanged within an organization or a network that crosses geographic boundaries. Health information management (HIM) professionals play an important role in facilitating the ease of data entry, use, analysis, and maintenance in all levels of computer systems and networks in healthcare organizations. 

Basic ICD Coding, Part I

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the basic principles of the ICD-10-CM Coding and Classification System, including the sequencing of codes and the impact on reimbursement. 

Basic CPT Coding, Part I

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the basic principles of CPT® coding and classification systems, the sequencing of codes and impact on reimbursement, as well as the ability to distinguish between CPT basic coding and HCPCS Level II codes. The student will practice assigning codes for procedures in this course.

Basic ICD Coding, Part II

This course concentrates on coding and reimbursement related to inpatient records. 

Intermediate Coding

The purpose of this course is to give students practice applying the official coding guidelines to complex documentation. Students will assign both diagnosis and procedure codes to case studies focusing on correct code assignment, and sequencing, ensuring the UHDDS guidelines and official guidelines are followed. 

Reimbursement Methodology

This course will explore the prospective payment systems that are used by the U.S. government, as well as other key healthcare organizations. Each system will be analyzed as it ultimately can compromise a patients' source of payment for healthcare services. The course gives an introductory look at the history of healthcare reimbursement and the types of methodologies it encapsulates. It also seeks as preparation for employment in the reimbursement system setting, as well as a position as a professional coder. 

Professional Coding Practice

The purpose of this course is to provide additional practice in applying the coding knowledge and skills acquired in all your previous Coding Basics courses. This practice is designed to simulate real-life coding scenarios.
