Frequently Asked Questions |

Medical transcription, a $15 billion dollar industry, is an exciting and rewarding career with substantial opportunity. Medical transcription is the process of translating oral dictated material to printed or computerized form as a record of the patient's medical history and treatment. While healthcare documentation has evolved due to the introduction of new technologies such as EHR systems and speech recognition, the need for skilled, knowledgeable, and experienced healthcare documentation professionals remains strong. An “extra set of eyes” is still needed to ensure the accuracy and completeness of patient health records. Thus, the demand for quality documentation is ever increasing. A professional medical transcriptionist (MT) requires knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, laboratory values, pharmacology, medical style, grammar, formats, standards, technology, and legal requirements of patient records. |

Students should have intermediate word processing skills and computer skills, and a normal level of audiometric acuity. A positive attitude and focus are necessary. This career is for self-starters and people who are self-disciplined and can complete their daily assignments. Realistically this is a professional career path that can be regarded as equal to a 4-year college program. The medical transcription industry is evolving, becoming more technology and detail oriented. While the studies are not difficult for the average person, it takes patience, commitment and effort to master the competencies required of this career. The benefits of working at home, the portability of the job, and the prestige of this career more than make up for the time and effort needed to achieve competency. Programs that offer to train you in less time are very risky as far as preparedness and placement upon graduation. Med-Line’s program is self-paced, with students completing it anywhere from 12 months to 24 months. |
|
Med-Line highly encourages student involvement with the AHDI and will be provided proof of enrollment status, upon request, to obtain a student rate for membership. Student membership is $55.00. The benefits of membership, i.e. discounts, networking, shared knowledge, staying current and relevant is priceless! Go to www.ahdionline.org to learn more. |
